NI Civil Service Adopt a Shared Services Approach across a Managed Network from eir Business NI

Managed network services support delivery of shared services across the public service

In 2007, eir Business NI were awarded the contract to upgrade the NI Civil Service network connecting all 11 Government departments on a managed network and helping transform its public sector services. In less than 2 years, core rollout of Network NI was complete connecting 275 Central Government sites into one managed network, providing the foundation for public sector reform including Account NI, eHR Connect, Records NI and NI Direct.  The managed network and  inherent network security allows the NI Civil Service to adopt a shared services approach with applications sitting on their own secure mpls vpn connection and centrally accessible by all departments.

Network NI is now rolled out across the public sector to over 400 sites and more than 24,000 users, delivering a managed network for WAN, LAN, Internet, IP telephony, WiFi, Video Conferencing and Unified Communications.  It now serves an extended list of Government departments and agencies including the Department of Justice, Environment Agency and Education & Skills Authority.

Network NI has been widely hailed as game changing for the public sector in Northern Ireland. The network acts as a foundation on which the Northern Ireland Government has been able to layer additional functions and advanced technology in addition to savings of £12 million on network service costs.

Following on from the success of Network NI, eir Business NI has developed partnerships with other public sector organisations and its underpinning solutions are enabling secure communications that most Northern Ireland citizens interact with every day – not just with central departments  but with schools (c2K), libraries (Libraries NI), third-level institutes (Belfast Met & Ulster University) and local councils across Northern Ireland.  Key among public sector demands has been a reliable, robust, high-performing network that facilitates the adoption of technologies such as IP telephony and video.

“We believe that eir Business NI provided not just the best value for money but also the most flexible solution.

What really appealed to me about eir Business NI was, they were as committed to making these big projects a success as we were. I’ve found the best thing about working with eir Business NI is that we don’t fall out over issues, we work them out and we move on and the relationship has been very successful.”
